Dr Zahn is also a Consultant Psychiatrist at the National Service for Affective Disorders at the Maudsley Hospital and a Reader in Mood Disorders at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King's College London. His research is seeking to understand emotions in depression such as self-blame and worthlessness, as well as social behaviour, which is of importance to bipolar disorder. He wants to use that understanding to develop personalised treatments. If you wish, we are happy to let you know more about ongoing research at the Centre for Affective Disorders at King's College London and studies which may be suitable for you to participate in.

Dr Zahn founded the London Depression Institute in 2019 to combine private healthcare with education and research. The vision is to develop education materials to empower people to understand their depression and treatment options from a research perspective. Researchers often have to question textbook knowledge and learn how to deal with uncertainty. The philosophy behind our education materials is to incorporate that research-minded stance. These materials will be made available on this website once they have been completed.
The initial assessment will involve reviewing the information your referring doctor has provided. We will discuss your specific questions and your history to understand the nature of the issues. The appointment will last for one hour and you and your referring doctor will receive a letter with the results of the assessment and treatment recommendations. These may include optimising medication, discussing the most appropriate psychotherapy, lifestyle changes, as well as alternative treatments with emerging evidence such as neurostimulation. Dr Zahn will not be able to provide psychotherapy or neurostimulation therapies himself, but will be able to refer you for further treatment and discuss risks and benefits. His neurofeedback treatment is currently not available clinically, as it is only in the early stages of research.
Often depression does not get better with the antidepressants most commonly prescribed, or people experience side effects which means they have to stop them. Dr Zahn will make his experience and knowledge about further treatment options available to you. His experience is based on working as a consultant psychiatrist in nationally leading specialist mood disorder services at the Manchester Royal Infirmary (2011 - 2013) and the Maudsley Hospital (since 2013) in London.
Dr Zahn will offer further consultations if you wish. These can either take place in person or over the phone/video conference and will usually last for 30 minutes. The interval between visits can be agreed, but if you wish to try a new medication, a consultation needs to be scheduled after one or two weeks to review this. If you would like Dr Zahn to prescribe rather than your GP, at least one follow-up appointment is needed to review effects and side effects.
